The flag is based on Kansas' historic state banner, but with the colour of the field changed to green. The sunflower represents Kansas' nickname of the "Sunflower State" and has thirteen petals to symbolise the thirteen original states. The six-pointed star in the centre of the sunflower symbolises that Kansas was the sixth state to be formed from the area of the Louisiana Purchase. It also represents the Kansas state motto of "Ad Astra Per Aspera" - through adversity to the stars. The green of the field and the gold of the sunflower represent the state's wheat fields which give Kansas another one of its nicknames, the "Wheat State".
