Description
The flag is based on the one flown by the Green Mountain Boys during the American Revolution, which has long been used as a regimental flag by the Vermont National Guard. Rather than the thirteen stars arranged in a naturalistic pattern of the Green Mountain Boys' flag, there are fourteen stars to represent Vermont as the fourteenth state to join the Union, which are arranged in a geometric pattern similar to that used on the United States flag. The green field reflects the literal meaning of the name Vermont - "Green Mountain" - and its nickname of the "Green Mountain State".
