Alternate US Flags: New Jersey

The shield is a simplified version of the Coat of Arms of New Jersey and shows three ploughs to symbolise the importance of agriculture to the state's history and its nickname of the "Garden State". There are three to show that New Jersey was the third state to ratify the US Constitution, as well as the three European nations to colonise the region - Britain, the Netherlands and Sweden. The three waves represent the Atlantic Ocean and repeat the symbolism of the number three. Blue and buff are the state colours of New Jersey.
